THE PHILIPPINE CENTER Update – June 21, 2002
By Ely Suson

The Philippine Cultural and Civic Center Foundation, Inc. is fast approaching a promising and exciting stage in its history.  The reason is “people.”  A number of people who can make things happen are getting involved.

We have embarked on a major fund-raising drive that presents many facets and is aimed at raising money to erect a building of our own:

First, Ed Sandoval is spearheading the drive with a letter to be sent to the Filipino-American community asking for donations.  The details will be threshed out in the meeting of the Committee on Fund-raising (with Ed Sandoval as chairman) and the Board of Trustees and officers of the Philippine Center on June 4 at 6:30 PM at the Lychee Garden Restaurant on Layton Avenue.

Second is the use of LASIK (surgery for near-sightedness and far-sightedness) as part of raising funds, planned by John Suson.  Ed Sandoval will coordinate this with his own activity.

Third, Elma Racadio and Jazmin Parcon-Sandoval have co-chaired a committee that will stage raffle, also, as part of our fund-raising drive.

Fourth, a new arrival at the scene and a very important addition to our community is Dan Tunell, who is married to Ria – a Filipino.  He works for a nonprofit corporation that is heavily involved in fund raising and, therefore, has an extensive knowledge on this subject.  He has offered his service, free, to the Philippine Center.

There will be more about this fund-raising drive in future issues of the Bulalakaw.

The Free Medical Clinic has continued to serve the uninsured and underinsured in increasing numbers under the Medical Directorship of Volette Singson and with the contribution of volunteer services provided by a retinue of loyal supporters.  The clinic opened in October 28, 2000 and as of May 11, 2002, 198 patients have been served with a total estimated value of the services rendered of $12, 950.00 Of course, the services, together with some medicines are given free.

Mammography screening in cooperation with the Milwaukee Health Department and bone density screening with the support of Novartis Pharmaceuticals were conducted on November 11, 2001.  The free mammography will be repeated on June 22, 2002.
