THE PHILIPPINE CENTER Update – February 12, 2001
Prepared by Ely Suson
(with suggestions by Gerry Ramos, Jojo Ramos and Volette Singson)

1.       Alex Vinluan, M.D. was elected member of the regular board of trustees on January 4, 2001, replacing Mr. John Cherba who moved to North Carolina.  We express our gratitude to our friend John for serving in the board and for his ideas which have helped us move forward from a period of uncertainty to where we are at present.  Thanks, John.  We are well established now.  Continue to connect with us.  Great things are still to come.

Also, we would like to thank Alex Vinluan for accepting the invitation to serve in the board of trustees of the Philippine Center.  He is one of the most experienced and dedicated persons in Milwaukee whose wisdom and expertise have graced many of our organizations.
Changes in the structure of the Foundation consequent to the elections in the various organizations include:

Chris Visaya, DDS replacing Alex Vinluan, M.D.  as ex-officio member of the Board of Trustees for FAAWIS.
Jerry Vinluan, M.D., replacing Maximo Cueto, Jr
. for PMAW.
Mr. Norberto de la Cruz, replacing Ramon Agor, M.D.
for UPAAW
.
Evelina Mabini, M.D.replacing  Mrs. Gloria Galang
for USTAAW
.

The other ex-officio members of the board, including Mrs. Agnes Cammer (PAMANA), Mr. John Holder (St. Norbert’s College), Mrs. Carmen C. Montoro (FASAW) and Mr. Felix Tuason
(PACF – IL)
will hold the same office for now and in the foreseeable.

Visit the appropriate section on our website:  www.philippinecenter.com for details on the composition of the Board of Trustees and its officers.

2.       Mrs. Norma Clemente was elected Honorary Trustee on February 1, 2001.  She was recognized and honored for her dedication to and sacrifice for her family after being widowed at a young age; and, her many years of selfless civic service that has benefited many in our community – Filipinos and non-Filipinos alike.  Norma has become an icon of the great and noble traditions of Philippine values that we want to transmit to the coming generation of Filipinos.  With these same values we, also, hope to define ourselves as an ethnic group to ourselves and to the rest of the community.

3.       Doctors Johnny and Volette Singson donated $1000.00 to the Free Medical  Clinic which is now located in Dr. Waleed Najeeb’s office on 5542 W. Fond du Lac Ave.  Look under Free Medical Clinic on our website for details of the schedule.

4.       Dr. Jimmy Yamat and Mr. Gerry Ramos co-chaired the fund-raising campaign conducted in December 2000. From December through the end of January 2001 a total of  $34,065.00 in checks was received.  The total collection for the year 2000 plus that of January 2001 amounts to:  $44,565.000.  This includes the following ($10,500.00):

          UPAA-WIS:  $500.00
PMAW:  $8,000.00  --$3,000.00 of which was earmarked for the Free
Medical Clinic.
Rey Gabriel:  $1,000.00.
Maxwell and Rosemary Weingarten Philanthropic Fund:  $1,000.00.  This
was specifically earmarked for the Free Medical Clinic.

In addition, the Philippine Center received a total of $9,500.00 in new pledges.  There is still about $150,000.00 in the old pledges.

5.       A dinner reception is planned for Elenita Mendoza Strobel, sponsored by the Lutheran Campus Ministry (UWM) either on March 27 or March 28 at the Philippine Center.  Strobel, a distinguished Filipino literary figure, will receive the Gamaliel Chair for Peace and Justice award, reserved for a selected few by the Ministry.  Other Asian, and non-Asian groups, are expected to attend the dinner reception.  Here is one occasion where the Filipinos should attend in force and claim part of the bragging rights to Leny Mendoza Strobel.

6.       A string concert will be held on June 16, 2001.   Joanna Mendoza (viola), Marvin Suson (violin) and Joseph Ortiguera (violin) --  our young professionals --  are performing.  They will suggest an accompanying pianist whom we will hire and, maybe,  also a cellist if they think necessary.

The concert will be held under the auspices of Dain Rauscher (with a donation of $2,000.000) and cosponsored by FAAWIS, PMAW, RMMF, and UPAAW. It will basically consist of two parts:

I. The usual western classical music to include Beethoven, Brahms, Sarasate or other material that the performers will choose;

II. Philippine Classics.

This promises to be a truly great presentation.  Reserve this date on your calendar.

Nieva and Edy Escall and Jojo Ramos are coordinating the necessary preparations.
